World Music Discovery

Globalization connects the west and the east
One positive aspect of globalization has been the discovery of musical expressions from the developing nations. The capacity to create music exists in all cultures, but the quest for commercialism and profit exposes the American listening public to only a small fraction of the world of music.
Globalization illuminates different musical forms
The world is smaller and more connected. Americans and westerners can now begin to experience the breadth and depth of its many musical forms.
World music is the music of Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is the music of the disenfranchised, displaced, and the dispossessed. Reggae and other examples are all musical forms that have developed from the inexorable movement of people to uplift, entertain and enlighten themselves.
The music comes from the traditional and the modern, rural and urban, east and west and is nestled within a world increasingly divided between the haves and have-nots. It influences, educates and helps to move people forward.

Diversity is the voice of issues
World music gives a voice to the voiceless and provides clarity on issues frequently obscured. These issues are not often addressed in mainstream music. Examples are government corruption, substance abuse, poverty, inequality, and AIDS-HIV.

Diversity fuses cultural differences
World music embodies the essence of diversity. Sometimes, it is as different from western music as night is from day. More often than not, what we have come to call World Music is a fusion of diverse cultural influences that strikes a positive chord.
These musical diversities can help to illuminate the signs along the road and reveal much needed and underlying truths about our world.
